Will Jaoquin Phoenix Rise From His Ashes?

Several weeks ago the talented yet enigmatic actor Joaquin Phoenix Interview startled his fans and the Hollywood scene by abruptly announcing his retirement from the silver screen. The young star best known for his powerful performances in Gladiator and the Johnny Cash bio-pic Walk the Line said he had accomplished all he wanted in regards to acting and was now concentrating on a new passion: music. Since Phoenix (age 34) did such a solid job of channeling the young Johnny Cash on screen and on Walk the Line’s soundtrack it made sense that he would branch out into country music. Yet Phoenix again shocked the public when he said that Hip Hop was his calling. Shortly thereafter Phoenix was spotted at a nightclub performing a brief rap set on stage that was confusing at best and unintelligible at worst. Sporting a scraggly beard, unkempt hair and dark sunglasses Phoenix wandered aimlessly around the stage while mumbling into a microphone and causing even his most ardent followers to question his mental state.

Joaquin Phoenix surfaced again the other night on the David Letterman Show and was borderline catatonic as he grumbled one-word answers or simply sat silent to a bemused Letterman. Phoenix did finally loosen up a bit only to cuss out bandleader Paul Schaefer, stick his gum under Letterman’s desk and ask if the audience was high on nitrous gas. Letterman, no stranger to weird guests (see Crispin Glover and Madonna), ended the bizarre performance with a classic line saying he was sorry Joaquin “couldn’t be here tonight” that actually got a smile out of Phoenix.

Phoenix reportedly checked into rehab in 2005 to treat alcoholism but lately he has been seen club-hopping in Miami and Los Angeles while failing to support fellow co-star Gwyenth Paltrow in the promotion of their new film Two Lovers. His publicist covered for Phoenix’s absence from the Cannes debut by saying the brooding star was suffering from “stomach flu”. Friends of the former actor have expressed concern for his condition saying he had a traumatic 2008 and that he may be teetering on the verge of a breakdown. In October of 1993 Joaquin was in attendance at the Viper Club in LA when his brother, River, then only 23, died of a drug overdose.

Phoenix has a history of being prickly with the media and fans and has made no secret of his disdain for the celebrity life. However, his recent behavior has some wondering if this all might be some elaborate hoax to promote a yet unannounced film. Whatever the reason it’s doubtful we’ve seen the last of Phoenix’s new persona, an odd mix of Rick Rubin looks, Jim Morrison nonchalance and a heroin user’s personality, that is captivating in a car crash kind of way.

Is Phoenix burned out from stardom, just having fun with the media or in need of an intervention? Time will tell if Joaquin can rise again, or if an untimely demise similar to the one that claimed the life of his brother is waiting in the wings.
